Snowflake STEP ONE

1. Melanie is an astronaut who volunteered to go into stasis for 40 years so as to reach Mars and begin the process of terraforming. (When she opens her eyes at the end of this time, she doesn't find an empty planet but a land of red sand, seven-foot tall fruit trees, and people ... because they developed a ship and passed her a mere 5 years after she'd taken off. One of her enemies from her Earth days is currently running the new colony and there is some definite anger there. Perhaps it was over a boy, who ended up marrying the shrew and there are some good moments between Melanie and this boy and some time-hopping to pass along some ideas. Maybe he's the bad guy and her fresh memories rekindle something in him or brew sympathy...idk)

2. [job that could include terraforming ... hydroponic related ... plants that put out a much higher concentration of oxygen.] Melanie had been a gardener until about 2 years ago. (Well, 52 years ago.)

3. Melanie volunteered for this mission or did someone draft her for it? She wasn't quite sure who signed that paper and shook that man's hand but she had a pretty good feeling that she had because she'd kinda been there (she had drunk a lot of alcohol to dry those tears). She had been upset about her father's death and so didn't even think about the silent goodbye she was saying to scores of the living when she drunkenly signed away their shared lives together.

4. Melanie loved a man but hadn't yet allowed herself to admit it. When she awoke, she found him in his 70s (but looking younger because science) and oscillating between everything she treasured in the past to everything she stood against. (You can imagine the tension.) P.S. He is also some sort of power figure in this colony.

5. Melanie is still entrenched in her own pop culture, so she watches re-re-reruns of TV shows and is still surprised when people she can relate to on bigger issues get thrown off by the little stuff. She has a wit and sense of humor that allows her to navigate from choppy waters back to land.
